How to know you have bats

Why exclusion is the only legal method

Quebec bats are legally protected: killing or capturing them without authorization is prohibited. They're also precious — one bat eats hundreds of insects per night. The legal, effective method is exclusion:

FAQ — Frequently asked questions

Can you do this in summer?

We inspect and prepare year-round, but the exclusion itself is scheduled outside the maternity season (before June or after mid-August) so flightless pups aren't trapped. It's a legal and ethical requirement.

A bat got into my bedroom — what do I do?

Don't touch it bare-handed. Close the room's door, open the window, let it leave. If contact with a sleeping person or child was possible, call Info-Santé (811) for a rabies risk assessment. Then call us to find the entry point.

Does the guano really need to be removed?

Yes, if the deposit is significant: it can harbour histoplasmosis spores, attracts insects and soaks insulation with odour. We remove it with proper protection and disinfect the area.
